Hidden Caries
What is it and how can it be detected?
These are pit and fissure lesions that develop through tiny enamel defects, progressing under seemingly intact tooth structure. These hidden lesions are invisible at the surface. This phenomenon is relatively new due to fluoridation. While helping to improve the oral health of many Americans, fluoridation has resulted in harder tooth enamel. But beginning cavities that once began on the tooth's surface have now migrated below the surface.
Traditional methods of decay detecting such as sharp probes, x-rays and magnification are at best about 50% accurate in determining these pit and fissure cavities.
DIAGNOdent - Caries detection aid
Fortunately, we now have a new high-tech diagnostic device that will be 90% positive for these lesions. It is called the "DIAGNOdent." It uses laser technology to identify these incipient sub-surface cavities. The procedure is quick and totally pain free. And best yet, there is no charge.
It is part of our commitment to provide the highest quality service and care that can be achieved in dentistry today.
When you come in for your next check-up, we will use the DIAGNOdent to investigate any suspicious areas.
